Sweet Fruit

As I obsessively tune into the relentless news cycle, I’m overwhelmed by all the chaos around me. Chaos within me, too. I have no idea how to respond.

And yet, when I begin to feel this sense of powerlessness, I realize that I do know what to do. It may be apple picking season, but the water is calling. Head to the lake!

On this unseasonably warm fall day, I hop on my bike and pedal to my favorite beach where I join a small community of seekers. Seekers of peace. Seekers of joy. Seekers of renewed energy. Seekers who are willing to sweat for all this sweet fruit.

I’ve chosen a quiet timeslot for this visit to the sauna truck. Participants are encouraged to greet each other but to refrain from extended chit chat. It quickly becomes clear that not everyone is capable of maintaining sacred silence. Surprisingly, we’re all good- natured and even forgiving about this. We’re just so happy for this time of connection.

After ten minutes of intense heat, I’m ready for my first plunge. As I wade into the 65 degree water, I’m surprised that it isn’t too chilly for my typically sensitive feet. Due to the expansive sandbar, it’s a long trek out before I can go all the way under. Ahhh…refreshing! I dunk below the surface a few more times and then hurry back to the sauna.

I repeat this cycle twice, spending more time in the invigorating water on my final plunge. Then, I stand in the lake and bask in the warm sun. I savor the peace, joy, energy and euphoria flowing through me.

On my way home, I stop for coffee to nourish my body. And to reflect on all the nourishment my Spirit received from the sweltering sauna, the connection with others, and the invigorating water. I feel a sense of power in me!

As I savor the sweet fruits of peace, joy, renewed energy and power, the questions return: What about all of the chaos around me? How am I to respond?

Obviously, I can’t resolve the chaos around me. I can trust that each of us, doing the next small thing to care for ourselves, to care for each other, and to care for ALL living beings, will eventually provide the powerful healing our world desperately needs.

What to do when I lose this sense of trust? Take a break from the news. Head to the lake. Open myself to its sweet fruit.

How about you? During these chaotic times, what helps you maintain your sense of trust?
