Yesterday morning, I was bombarded by aggressive text messages from a relative I’ll call “Jay.” Jay was boasting about the presidential election and trying to convince me that God had prevailed.
I was struck by the line, “God is on my side.” I wonder, “Who is this God that is on Jay’s side?” and “Does God take sides?”
I’ve had some experiences of a great mystery, that some call God, of Love, Peace, Joy, Compassion and much, much more. If God is Love, does Love take sides? Or is this Love so radical that it dwells at everyone’s side?
Is it possible that Love dwells with Jay and with me? That Love dwells with our President elect, a convicted felon who has been found liable for sexual assault and with our current Vice President, a former prosecutor?
Does Love dwell with every undocumented immigrant, transgender woman, and pregnant teenager? Does Love even dwell with all those guys in their silly MAGA hats?
Does Love dwell with all those boasting about a victorious election and with all of us grieving a horrifying outcome?
Is it possible that this great mystery, this Love, Peace, Joy and Compassion, is so ridiculously expansive that there are no limits to who it chooses to hang out with?
I wonder what it would be like to be more fully awake to this Love. Perhaps this is what the controversial term, “woke,” really means.
With wonder,
Bridget

Beautifully said! I feel so “woke”!
As I sat in the boat 32 years ago w a Palestinian man surrounded by soldiers w rifles – I felt the love of the entire world! Oh to keep returning to that open heart of endless possibilities!
With gratitude!
