Celebrating Great Love

She wasn’t my biological aunt or my adult children’s biological great-aunt, but she certainly deserved these titles. In the notes for her own obituary, my late Aunt Justine referred to Judy as “the best friend a girl could ever have.”

For many years, Justine and Judy shared a duplex, split meals in restaurants, and sent joint Christmas cards. They always socialized and traveled together. When we visited Aunt Justine in Milwaukee, Judy was always part of the plans.

Due to the stigma of their times, I doubt that Justine and Judy ever even considered further defining their relationship. Looking back, I view them as life partners. I wish they had felt the freedom to use a term like this.

As Judy lingered in her final stage of life, I was in touch with great loss. She was a beloved aunt and a physical connection to both Aunt Justine and my Milwaukee roots.

As Judy’s breathing became shallow, I was in touch with great joy. I have no idea what the mysterious afterlife looks like. I do trust that Justine was waiting with excited anticipation, ready to welcome Judy. Maybe they shared a ham sandwich (with no mayo – they were fanatical about their joint dislike for this spread!), some good Wisconsin cheeses, and a beer or two.

Judy made her transition on Christmas Day. On Valentine’s Day, I will celebrate great love between two aunts who shared their love with me, my family, and all who knew them. We love you, Aunt Judy and Aunt Justine!

How about you? What great love are you celebrating today?
