Start small
with a tiny baby
an old carpenter
and a wide-eyed teenager.
Add a weary donkey
an inquisitive cow and
some wandering shepherds
with their smelly sheep.
Place a bright angel
in the scene
as a reminder that
Spirit is present
in the quiet
and the ordinary.
Wait awhile
for three wise guys,
who don’t care about
political power,
to show up.
Patiently watch
as the baby becomes
a child
then grows into an adult,
with a ragtag bunch of followers,
connecting with a loving power
and healing others
especially those on the margins.
Start small.
Sit in the quiet
connecting to a loving power
discerning “what is mine to do?”
within family
community
the world
focusing on marginalized folks.
Start small.
Take a tiny step.
Be patient.
Don’t get discouraged.
It will take a long time
for the movement of
compassion
healing
and non-violence
to grow.
Start small.
