The Light Within

As the days grow shorter, I love the return of the holiday lights. It’s only mid-November, and I’ve already participated in several early displays: ZooLights in Lincoln Park, the Great Tree in the Walnut Room, and the City of Chicago’s 110th Tree Lighting. Each was a beautiful, joy-filled outing with great companionship.

These holiday light displays are wonderful, and they are temporary. The lights are switched on in late fall, they dazzle brightly for a season, and then they are switched off until next year. If only I could abide in these lights!

As these festive lights continue to attract me, a candle in my den gently whispers, “Come and sit with me.” It, too, is temporary. No candle burns forever, and yet it seems to be issuing an invitation to something deeper:

“Slow down and go inward.
Awaken to the light within you.
Bask in this light for a while.

Then move back into the world
remembering this light within you
and within each being you encounter.

You’ll probably forget this light.
Not to worry!
Simply return to me and

Slow down and go inward.
Awaken to the light within you.
Bask in this light for a while.

Then move back into the world
remembering this light within you
and within each being you encounter.

You’ll probably forget this light…”

Is this an ongoing invitation? One that is continuing to entice me to a deeper light? I suspect so. Rather than trying to figure it out, I want to abide in this light. How about you?

Peace and love this holiday season! May we all awaken to the light within us!
