Trusting in the Light: The Same Light

As I enter this new year

I want to trust in the Light

the same Light

that dwells deep inside

every person and living being.

I get distracted

by all the loud and negative voices

that disregard the dignity

of all who are struggling

in these dark and divisive times.

It’s pretty easy to sense the light

radiating from the tent of the unhoused man

who sleeps by the bus stop

just a few blocks west of our warm condo.

The Light clearly shines

from the eyes of the undocumented grandmother

who sits outside of Jewel

gratefully accepting gifts of food and clothing

from other generous neighbors.

The Light is present in the givers, too.

How can I trust that the Light

the same Light

resides in every person

who voted to clear our streets

store entrances

and country

of those who are unhoused

undocumented

and hungry

treating them like debris?

When I move away from the noise

close my eyes

and go deep inside

I know that the Light

the same Light

dwells in me

and I’m invited to

bask in the Light

savor the Light

become the Light

a lifetime project for sure and

continue to go back out and

look closely

beyond the fear

for glimmers of the Light

The same light

That dwells deep within

every person

and living being.

How about you? What is happening in you as you enter this new year?
